EmVoc -Empowerment Through Vocationalization

Vocational training is one of the most important sessions in the education of disabled children. Vocational education aims to train students about the skill training, concept of a job and job related functional academics. The goal and function of vocational education for students with disabilities is providing them with skills to secure employment opportunities for independent living. It is the specialized training and practical grooming sessions for the children to excel in their fields of skill and interest.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING UNIT LOCATION

Nipmr vocational unit is located in the fifth floor of NIPMR’s main building.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING UNIT TIMING

Monday to Friday 09 am to 3.30 pm

OBJECTIVES
  • To promote employment oriented skill, up gradation training to adults who are differentially abled and their caretakers (if applicable)
  • To encourage self-employment by acting support agency providing necessary help
  • To certify and to liaison with the trained institutes in order to strengthen training placements opportunities for the trained differentially abled and their caretakers to provide.
  • To provide guidance and counseling to identified persons with disabilities to increase their participation in society as an individual.
  • To improve quality of life of identified persons with disabilities by improving interpersonal relations.
  • To support persons with disabilities through income generation activities
AIM
  • To empower caretakers of differently abled or differently abled and equip them with tools to become self-reliant through vocational training and rehabilitation
  • To empower people with special needs, through income generation

PROCESS
  • The registration can be done through Google form link.
  • The interested candidates who are physically or mentally challenged between age group of 18 to 30 can make registration.

  • Once the candidates have successfully registered will be called for a initial assessment by the respective department s like social work, special education psychology, occupational therapy.
  • The assessment for IQ, Adaptive behaviour and aptitude will be done by a psychologist. Following that occupational therapist will be doing pre/ vocational assessment, for assessment for the skill ability and interest there after special educators will be doing vocational assessment and Generic skill assessment for finding out further functional academic knowledge and ability.
  • The initial assessment charge will be Rs.1500/-
  • After the completion of initial assessment by the concern departments the team meeting will be called by all team members’ candidates and their caretakers.
  • According to the level of IQ they will be absorbed in to the independent vocational training program or to the parent and child empowerment programme.
  • The client is will be directed to either individualize vocational training along with caregiver based on the following criteria.
    1. IQ
    2. Adaptive behavior
    3. Behavioral /sensory issues
    4. Social and communication skill
    5. Skill ,Ability, and interest
  • The entire training programme will be under the guidance of a special educator.
  • The duration of the vocational training programme will vary according to each trade.
  • Once the training programme undertaken by the candidates successfully commence the candidates will be given course completion certificate by the institute and which will have value to grab employment opportunity.

Ms. Achu Rajam Abraham

Assistant professor

She is an Occupational Therapist with 4.5 years expertise in the assessment and management of children with Neurodevelopmental disorders, and adults with orthopaedic and neurological disorders. She is currently working as an Assistant Professor for the BOT course in NIPMR. Her areas of special interests are hand splinting, assistive technology and Sensory Integration Therapy.

She is soft spoken and enjoys being with children and finds joy in even the smallest of victories and milestones achieved by the clients.

Qualification
  • MOT in Pediatrics (SRM College Of Occupational Therapy, Chennai) in June, 2014
  • BOT (KMCH College Of Occupational Therapy, Coimbatore) in March, 2012
  • Certified in Hand splinting, Department of Occupational Therapy, Manipal University
  • Certified in KinesioTaping Level 1 and 2 by the Kinesio Taping Association International
  • Certified TheraTogs Fitter level 1
  • Completed a six month part-time course on Assistive Technology Solutions conducted by National Institute of Speech and Hearing and NIPMR.
  • Attended the Pre-K training program of Learning without tears

Special Educator

A special educator with 6 years of experience in teaching special needs children. Ms.SYAMILY KP helps to reach the maximum level of effectiveness in school children with special needs by providing a wide range of services on need based. Providing special support programmes for children with learning disability and helping them in mainstreaming .Different activities and experiences designed to help them fulfil their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Mrs Amrutha C.P

M.Sc Clinical Psyhology, Consultant Psychologist

Mrs Amrutha CP has done her M.Sc in clinical Psychology from Christ college Irinjalakuda. She has done her internship from Mental Health Centre Olampara, Trivandrum. Has a working Experience in District Mental Health Program (DMHP), Trivandrum, She has participated in OKHI Disaster Management. Worked in De Addiction Department at Mental Health Centre in Olampara. Also worked in APEX Counseling and Therapy Centre, Chalakudy (Award Bhavan). She has been working in NIPMR as Consultant Psychologist since 2018.

Jojo Thomas

Established social worker in the RARRC Project of Kerala Social Security Mission (KSSM) at NIPMR. Mr. Jojo Thomas is specialized in Medical and psychiatric social work and his areas of interest include Social Case work, De-addiction Counseling, Film Therapy and community health programs. His skills in coordination, problem solving and leadership have also been proven by leading various Community Camps and programs.
